1. Put your Peterson pipe in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. MAKE SURE IT IS COOL FIRST!
2. Turn the stem counter clockwise with pressure to loosen the connection. When taking the mouthpiece out, make sure to position it so you have a good grip, with one hand holding the shank firmly and the other the mouthpiece firmly. Rotate first, working first in one direction and then in the other to get the thing turning. Then pull out while rotating. The tighter the fit, the more rotation needed for distance outward.
3. After getting the stem removed; rub the tenon with Nr 2 pencil lead to lubricate it with graphite.
