Tsuge Pipes offers a wide variety of unique and incredibly imaginative designs. Founded by Kyoichiro Tsuge, the company has thrived despite hardships, much like its founder.
Born in 1911, Tsuge found himself orphaned at the age of 13. He would go on to live with his uncle, where he would be able to apprentice as a maker of ivory cigarette holders.
After his apprenticeship finished, Tsuge opened up his own company, Tsuge Pipe Company Limited, in 1936, where he would try to make his mark on the world. However, the company would struggle for a time as World War Two raged.
Cigarette holders like the ivory ones Tsuge would make as an apprentice dominated Japan until after the war when images of General Douglas MacArthur would be seen and spread around. MacArthur, known for his trademark corn cob pipe, was a strong influence on Japanese pop culture of the time and so smoking pipes became incredibly popular.
Shifting to adapt to the new demand for pipes, Tsuge was able to get the briar needed to make new pipes and soon became the go-to place for Japanese smoking pipes. When you look through the vast selection of Tsuge pipes available, you will understand why.
With four main pipe categories, you have the ability to find any number of different smoking pipes. Some of these pipes are small, some are large, but they all have a unique look.
During a European trip the master sculptors took in the 1970s, the Tsuge team was able to learn from Italian and Dutch master pipe makers, bringing a new perspective back to Japan. This influence gives you the option to select a "traditionally European" shape if you are interested.
