A rich latakia blend pressed into thick and fragrant slices. This tobacco is strong in flavor and intensity. A main dish instead of an appetizer or dessert, the smoke will leave you satisfied. A fantastic tin to have on hand for any English lover, the smoke is thick and rewards your full attention.

What is in it?
This blend is an English crumble cake that is sliced before packing.  In Bengal Slices you will find...
Latakia: Cyprean Latakia is a strong component.
Oriental: Turkish is here in a small amount.
Virginia: The Virginia is of the yellow variety, but some of the Virginia is stoved to a black color.
Cavendish: There is an Unflavored Black Cavendish present.

What does it smoke like?
Bengal Slices is a strong English blend.  The Latakia is predominant in the flavor.  There is more sweetness than you would expect from a strong Latakia mixture.  The sweetness is partially from the Unflavored Black Cavendish and partially from an Anise or Licorice topping that has been applied.  The topping is light and this blend should not be considered an aromatic.  The pressed cakes have married the flavors very well.  Recommended for pipers familiar with Latakia who want more sweetness from a blend.  Nicotine is medium and flavor is full.  There are few English crumble cakes that have a topping like this, I can't think of a close comparison.

How to prepare it?
Let's face it, flakes and cakes are fun.  I recommend lightly rubbing out a flake to get a limestone pebble consistency.  Rubbing out before drying will result in less unsmokable powder being produced.  Dry to your preference.  The dryer this tobacco, the less you will notice the topping and the more pronounced the tobacco flavor will be.  Load your pebbles like a cube cut; fill the pipe using gravity only.  Do not press this tobacco tightly into the bowl since this cut will expand as it burns.

Possibly the best reintroduced tobacco to be had.

I want to thank Russ Ouellette for bringing this wonderful tobacco back for us. Much appreciated. If you don't know the story, look it up, it's fascinating. Bengal Slices truly is a unique tobacco. Much has been said about it's extraordinaire smooth and creamy nature and clean taste. The taste is so well blended it's practically in a league of its own. It has the richest Latakia, smokey and full flavored, but it's very mellow and toothless. It has flavorful orientals that add complexity rarely had in a blend (Yenidje?). And, then there's the top note...I don't really know if it's licorice or anise and I don't really care, as long as they never change it. It makes this smoke nice and cool without taking any of its flavors and complexity away. In fact, the Bengal Slices experience made me reevaluate what is five-star taste and strength and when exactly can it be said to have five-star room note? Taste and aroma are always so subjective anyway. But, this one blend (actually it's not a blend, but rather a sliced crumble cake) puts rating systems to the test and turns them upside down. Almost everyone I know says it has a great room note, something rarely bestowed on a Latakia forward tobacco. And, Bengal Slices proves that a tobacco doesn't have to taste like baked goods or candy to have unbelievable flavor; it's frequently given high marks for taste. This is not an uber-strong tobacco either, in fact, I find it mellow enough to smoke any time of day in spite of being Latakia heavy. Bengal Slices is just mesmerizing, defying similar blends as simply ho-hum. The closest I've had was another RO called Fusilier's Ration, and even it can't hold up next to Bengal Slices. The original slices were made ages ago by Sobranie...and although Balkan Sobranie has it's well-earned reputation, IMO Bengal Slices is better still.

For an English fan, the tobacco is fantastic. I enjoyed the Bengal Slices in the 80s. I’m glad Standard Tobacco of PA brought the blend back. The unsurpassed customer service and ease of doing business at TobaccoPipes.com rounded out a great experience. Five Stars gents. I’m glad you’re out there.

    A Unique Blend

Bengal Slices is different enough to separate itself from the pack of me-to blends with a unique top note unlike any other. I like it, but I like Tobacco Pipes offerings & customer service even better. Keep up the great work!

    Smooth and smokey

Posted by T. Thompson on 17th Jan 2018

I must say, years ago I smoked far more English blends than I do these days. With my tastes changing to sweet Virginia flakes and even some aromatics, I didn't hold much hope that Bengal Slices could be as smooth as other reviews I read claimed. I am happy to say the reviews were true. This could easily become my favorite Latakia tobacco. If you've tried English tobaccos in the past and found them harsh and unbalanced, Bengal Slices has to be tried. This is absolutely the smoothest Latakia based cake I've ever enjoyed. The only down side, if you can even call it that, it does tend to ghost your bowl, so unless you smoke other similar blends, you may want to try a cob, or dedicate a pipe for this one. If I smoked this more often, I'd probably give it five stars, but it's more of a special occasion smoke for me, one to be recommended all the same to be sure.
