Then I apply No-Ox to the stem, to preserve the finish. If you have any pipes with Vulcanite stems, you need to have a bottle of this preservative on hand. Start a maintenance program with your pipes, don't let your Vulcanite stems get too far gone. It's easier to prevent stem rot than it is to come in after the fact, and you need to remove a great deal of the stem material while cleaning up the decay. I've got a few pipes that were made at the beginning of the last century with Vulcanite stems. After the initial cleaning when I purchased them over twenty years ago, I used vegetable oil to coat the stems. I discovered No-Ox about ten years ago and I've been using No-Ox on these one hundred and twenty year old Vulcanite stems ever since, and they look brand new. The No-Ox works much better than the vegetable oil did. I have a regular maintenance program that allows me to keep ahead of any oxidation before it occurs.
