What can one say about a pipe nail? If it tamps, it's a 5. If not, pitch it. The pipe nail tamps just fine and earns five stars. Moreover, it's inexpensive and, if lost, is easily replaced. But, is it an important accessory? It certainly is for reasons far more significant than burning your fingers. A good smoke, in my opinion, depends on controlling the tobacco burn. After all, we're talking about a tobacco burning oven which creates ash, and you just can't bank pipe ash well with your thumb. The tendency to do so often results in time lost for the annoying and avoidable task of draft hole unplugging. So do yourself a favor and get a pipe nail. I recommend this one.
