Cornell & Diehl After Hours Flake Pipe Tobacco

Metallic after taste probably not well fermented. Too many large stems.

As a relatively new pipe smoker (almost a year), I started with aromatic blends. I came across Virginia tobaccos a few months ago and fell in love with their taste. Cornell & Diehl has a wide selection and I just tried After Hours. When I first opened the tin, I was hit with the dark rum scent. It was pleasant. I rubbed out some and found it to be just a little on the damp side. Now the date it was made was about 2 months, so I’m not sure that had anything to do with it, but I let it dry out for about 30 minutes. It packed well and lit fairly easily. The initial taste reminded me of an Irish whiskey blend I had tried. I did get a taste of the caramel and what reminded me of cocoa. The caramel/cocoa taste subsided but the dark rum taste remained. It wasn’t overpowering, just subtle in the background. Like any other straight Virginia, you have to “sip” it, not puff away real fast. Otherwise, it will burn hot and you will miss out on the sweetness of the blend. I would not call this an aromatic tobacco, but simply an enhanced Virginia. If you’ve never tried a Virginia, this is a great one. I only wish it was sold in bulk, or at least an 8 oz tin. This is a fantastic smoke in every way, a definite favorite that I'll enjoy time after time.

Would be an all day, everyday smoke if I could buy in bulk.
