Cornell and Diehl's Bayou Morning Flake is a strong Virginia and Perique blend.  While most Virginia and Perique blends are sweet, tangy, and light this blend is a dark and rich departure from the type.  The dark chunks are made of twenty five percent Perique and a mixture of Virginias.  The blend is strong and full flavored, yet displays a surprising delicacy.  Far more than an entry level Va/Per, this blend is an experienced piper's blend.

What is in it?
Opening the tin reveals a very soft flake that breaks apart into a ribbon easily.  The smell is on the dark and rich end of the Virginia spectrum.  You would never confuse the Virginia here for Orlik Golden Sliced or Dunhill Flake.  The broken, loose and thick flakes contain:

Virginia: This blend is supposed to contain Red Virginia.  I would not have guessed this from the flavor.  The Virginias have been stoved, aged or pressed into a richer component.  There is a woody flavor that reminds me of the aroma of a moist decomposing log.  There is no bright, sweet, light Virginia here, but the blend is rich, full, and pungent.

Perique:  A full quarter of this blend is Perique tobacco.  That is a generous application of the potent leaf.  Perique is usually fruity and spicy, but the spice is diminished here.  It is remarkable that this much Perique does not run away with the blend.

How does it smoke?
This blend is a much stronger representation of it's genre than many Va/Pers.  I do not remember having a more full flavored Va/Per.  This is to Va/Pers what Dunhill Nightcap is to English Blends.  While researching this blend, I assumed that the high Perique content was to push the envelope for smokers who love perique.  Having smoked the blend I believe that 25% perique was simply the amount needed to balance the strong and dark Virginias.   The first light tastes of a rich fruit like prunes or figs.  This is the Perique jumping out front, but it is quickly restrained by the Virginia.  The interplay continues down the bowl and after the first third I notice none of the slight harshness that can accompany some C&D blends.  The dark fruitiness and mouldering wood gives a flavor reminiscent of a dark cider.  The blend is a relaxing and contemplative smoke.  The smoothness midbowl hides a good dose of nicotine that may catch some pipers off guard.

How to prepare it?
The flakes in my tin were partially broken up, but one could see how dense and thick they were at packing.  A rub out was not necessary, and rolling the flake into a ball seems to give good results.  I was surprised that drying time seemed to lessen the flavor in this blend.  Far too loose for a cube cut, the flake does not seem to be dense enough to bother maintaining during loading.  It is best to treat this blend like a thick ribbon.  A lighter than usual pack seems to help keep the relights at bay, and small puffs will help keep the flavor strong and the nicotine in check.

    Bayou Morning Flake

This is a broken flake with the texture of bread. Not what one would call a beautiful flake from an aesthetic standpoint. Needs to be consumed in a pipe dedicated to naturals. If you like Navy Flake or if you like Virginia Flakes, this needs to have some place in your home. The Perique Is big from a percentage standpoint but smooth. This is the last smoke of the day for you as it overwhelms your pallet with fermented tobacco which is fantastic and cool burning. The next day your favorite Virginia is perceivably much sweeter as compared to this complex tobacco. The nic hit is balanced back from the high sugar content of the Virginias. Powerhouse of flavor - sometimes it's just what is needed.

This is one of the best Virginia/Perique blends I have ever smoked. Upon opening the tin you get a wonderful bready, earthy, spice. It presents more as a broken flake and is easy to rub out or fold and stuff. It has been my experience that this blend needs little to no drying time and can be smoked right out of the tin immediately and should be jarred immediately after opening or it will become bone dry very quickly. During the smoke you are presented with a delicious experience of earthy, bready, tangy Virginia and red and black pepper spice from the perique. Careful with the retro-hale as it is all pepper and doesn't apologize. Not let's talk nicotine. You are going to want to smoke this blend after having a big breakfast or brunch and it pairs well with coffee or iced tea. You are going to want to also take your time as the nicotine comes on strong, straight from the full belly feel to the sweats and if you push past that, well we know what comes next. I highly recommend this blend and would suggest cellaring it as it can only get better with age.
