Eduardo León Jimenes founded La Aurora Cigars in 1903. He was a young man of 18 years when he opened his factory in Don Pedro, a Dominican city in the Santiago province. In this venture, he was marrying a family tobacco tradition started by his grandfather with a personal dream of making premium, handmade cigars and sharing them with the world. Over a century later, the dream lives on in the celebrated La Aurora cigar. Despite the once humble six employee operation now having grown to be a worldwide cigar brand employing thousands, La Aurora sustains the ethos of a family brand, now led by Jimenes’ grandson, Guillermo León Herbert.
By the time of Jimenes passing in 1937, La Aurora had grown to be a widely respected brand. His brother, Herminio, would take the reins with help from two of Jimenes’ sons, Eduardo León Asensio and Fernando León Asensio.
However, the coming decades would threaten the company’s existence. Just as La Aurora had started exporting, World War II broke out and they were forced to pull back as the violent seas saw cargo ships fired upon by warships. The smoke cleared on a cautiously optimistic world, but the ‘50s proved to have their obstacles as the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo came to power, taking control of tobacco and stifling the industry. Thankfully, the ‘60s would shine some good fortune on La Aurora, as exporting was finally restored.
Following Trujillo’s assassination in 1961, La Aurora’s corporate group (E. León Jimenes S.A.) was able to expand. Now the company is responsible for all kinds of products, mostly focused on tobacco and beverages. But La Aurora Cigars continue to satisfy the palates of smokers around the world.
