Full, ripe Virginias are sliced and mixed with Burley and a nice dark Cavendish. Add just a touch of Latakia and hints of rum and plum flavoring and you’ve got Plum Cake by Mac Baren. First introduced to the market in 1957, its been a favorite of pipe smokers for more than 50 years.

Best Part is Smell in the Tin
Love the smell of this tobacco. Beyond that? Meh. Won't be buying any more.

Navy Blend Plumcake
My method is rotating four tobaccos each with three pipes dedicated to a tobacco. I nearly always purchase 16oz bulk and I change out a tobacco as I run out. Plumcake is replacing C&D's Maple. I give my pipes a good Everclear cleaning at change over and I am dedicating my three Petersons (Harp Billard, St. Pats, and Dublin churchwarden) to the Plumcake. I have waited until I had smoked at least three bowls in each before reviewing. I find the Plumcake easy to pack, light, and quite flavorful. The flavor is complex, but from tin note, smoke to room note I cannot sense a hint of what could be called Plumcake?? I am enjoying it, as it burns slowly with no tongue bite I can detect. Something odd though, toward the end of the bowl I find a hard pellet about the size of a small marble forms. I have to crush it, mix with the dottle and relight, strange. Also I would not drink alcohol with this one, stings the mouth badly. Even ice water does a bit.

Not my thing
It’s interesting, but not something I’ll get again. I get a weird cumin and burnt match backnote, and my wife walked outside to see what I was burning. I do get a nice sweetness on the tongue and some rum, but I can’t taste any plum.

Plumbcake
A nice navy blend. Needs a little dry time. I smoke this around the holidays. No bite and I am told the room note is nice.

MacBaren Plumcake
When I first smoked this over 340 years ago there was a distinct aroma of a plum cake upon opening the tin. This is no longer there - it just smells like a blend of tobaccos. The taste is not as rich as it used to be either. I like it, but not enough to smoke every day. In comparison with the Plumcake of 30 years ago, I find it disappointing.
