Full, ripe Virginias are sliced and mixed with Burley and a nice dark Cavendish. Add just a touch of Latakia and hints of rum and plum flavoring and you’ve got Plum Cake by Mac Baren. First introduced to the market in 1957, its been a favorite of pipe smokers for more than 50 years.

I have been smoking the pipe for over 35 years and need to say that this is one of the worst tobacco that I have ever smoked. No taste; where is the plum? And the rum is nonexistent. Bland, with lots of tongue bite! This tin is on the way to the trash can!
I am a fairly new pipe smoker and I thought this blend was fantastic. The tin note was fantastic and it smoked like a dream. I didn’t get any bite, which was a concern from other reviews. I ordered more to age. Cheers !!
Without the bite issue, I'd rate this a 5-star blend.
The latakia is so subtle that even those who don't like English blends should enjoy Plumcake.
If I wasn't aware that it contained a touch of Latakia, I doubt that I'd be able to identify it.
Plumcake is so delicious with a great tin-note.
In my first review, I noted how a charcoal filter will solve the bite issue. I've since found that it also will not bite in a small/medium meerschaum lined Dublin bowl.
Plumcake is that good that it's definitely worth dedicating meerschaum lined briar.
This is truly a classic.
Then my two cans Mac Baren Plumcake arrived from TobaccoPipes in the US and I have to say that it is better than I remember.
Virginia, Burley, Cavendish and spicy stroke of Latakia .. and then it tastes good, just to the last where there comes a hint of "chocolate" over .. truly a pleasing reunion with an old acquaintance.
Slightly inconceivable that the factory does not sell at least through the largest tobacco dealers in Denmark, where it is produced .. there should be a certain customer base.
It can's decide whether it's an aromatic or a Scottish blend. Difficult to keep lit without constant puffing, then it bites. No perceptible flavor until the last third of the bowl, then it's delicious. Too bad you have to go through so much tasteless smoke to get to it.
This is one of my favorite blends & one whose tin note reminds me of my youth.
Lightly aromatic. Smooth. Mild nicotine.
The latakia gives a light smokiness without being obvious, giving room for the burley nuttiness & Virginia. A touch of sweetness from the Cavendish.
The bad news is is that Plumcake bites me. (To be fair I am prone to getting bit) That's easily solved by using a charcoal filter. In fact, I enjoy Plumcake so much, that I've dedicated a 9mm filtered briar just for it. it's that good.
4.5 stars out of 5.
Smooth taste, not bitter, even burn, very enjoyable.
Gives a pleasant break from my chain smoking of Virginia No. 1
Fully lives (smokes) up to its description!
