Erik Nording channeled many things when creating his smoking pipes. He went to school and learned engineering and blacksmithing, which allowed him to view the world of tobacco pipes differently than traditional makers. After building a pipe making machine for a local manufacturer that failed to pay him for his labor, he turned that debt into a partnership where Nording learned about pipes.
Thanks to Nording's education in engineering, making functional smoking pipes was easier for him. Basic pipes just require a few things, a chamber to hold the tobacco, a draught hole to allow for airflow, and a mouthpiece to allow for easier use. From his engineering perspective, that is a simple task to create. The difficulty is how to turn that simple concept into works of art that people will want to buy.
