Achille Savinelli Sr. built a name for himself selling tobacco and tobacco accessories. Originally a designer of pipes but not a manufacturer, it was not until two generations later when a grandson, Achille Savinelli Jr., turned the successful tobacco shop into a pipe smoking empire. Achille Junior took to sculpting briar into elegant and excellent smoking pipes like a fish takes to water.
According to Savinelli, Achille Junior saw the opportunity to improve the standard of Italian smoking pipes. At the time, the pipes made in Italy were mass-produced and not of good quality. This led to the pipes that were purchased in Italy being predominantly foreign made. By making his own pipes, Achille Junior not only reversed that trend but also helped spread Savinelli pipes worldwide.
Opening in the late 1940s, the Savinelli pipe factory greatly helped establish an Italian pipe market internationally. Today, run by great-grandson Giancarlo Savinelli, the company continues to be beloved by pipe smokers all over the world. Read more about the Savinelli history here.
