For this unique Special Reserve the oriental and possibly the virginia leaf has been replaced with a small batch of premium tobacco. What is in it?

Inside the tin is a very dense crumble cake of strong and dark looking tobacco.

Latakia: Cyprian Latakia is present in quantity. This is usually near the front of the flavor profile.

Black Cavendish: This is unsweetened and untopped. Perhaps adding some sweetness, this must be used in a small quantity.

Virginia: Both Red and Black Stoved Virginia are used. This brings a rich earthy flavor to the blend.

Oriental: Upgraded sun cured Oriental is used in this Special Reserve. There is a saltiness and sweet and sour flavor from this component.

Perique: The spiciness and fermented fruit flavor comes from a small amount of perique.

What does it smoke like?

Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding Special Reserve is so good it's unreal. Many blends pressed and presented in plugs or flakes have a consistent flavor profile. I found a lot of variation in flavors here. Like a good ribbon cut, the smoke meandered all over the flavor spectrum. You will find sweetness, sour briny flavor, buttery creaminess, and rich smokiness. Surprisingly, the Latakia is hard to distinguish, as it alone is steady throughout the bowl. Every other component fades in and out, but they all have a bitter woody smokiness with them. All of the flavors of an English mixture are here, and presented in a traditional manner. I would call this a great tobacco for a new to English smoker. With the clarity of flavor, it would allow one to identify the components they do and do not like and this could guide future purchases. Make no mistake; if this blend is a limited run, and it seems to be, it will be very sought after and remembered fondly when production ceases.

How to prepare it?

Opening a tin will reveal a plain dark brick of tobacco. It is quite possible to break off pieces to rub out. I found the moisture to be ideal, and I would recommend cutting the plug up and putting it in an airtight mason jar shortly after opening. Don't rub this out too much, it is rather easy to get a lot of wasted tobacco as powder. Some chunks may require more relights, but will smoke slowly and deliver excellent flavor. Pack very lightly, as the chunks will expand during smoking. A lot of work compared to a ribbon cut, but the experience is well worth the effort.

I find this to be a deeper, richer cousin of SPC’c Mississippi River. Less sweet than Mississippi River it demands my complete attention (a good thing in my book). Definitely worth having in your rotation if this style appeals to you. If you are unsure, it’s worth trying. If you like Latakia you will be pleased with this.

This is by far, one of the best English blends, if not the best, I have ever smoked. Rich, tangy, sour, sweet. Imagine the complexity of a Cabernet that was thrown In a smoker with some leather, some maple or oak wood chips, and some figs. There’s is something so miraculous about this blend that if alien beings come to earth and want to know some of the best things humanity can create, they need to open a tin of this and smoke it. I have 4 tins of this cellared, one opened. And if you think it doesn’t get better with age….oh but it does. This stuff is a work of tobacco art. It’s not easy to prepare. It can be a bugger to light in the beginning but once things start moving, it’s a beautiful adventure of flavors. It burns very very slow.

The first notes upon opening the tin harken to the first railroad tracks laid in Texas in 1852; the aroma of tar and wood permeates the senses. It's a hearty, woodsy smoke, a taste that takes one back to one's forefathers and mothers, those that hewed from the bedrock the foundations of our livelihoods today. As the bowl hits midway, full steam into this timeless treasure, I swear the smoke fell from the mouthpiece, a bass clef looped into little music notes. Flavor galore and a plethora of plume exuded from my long-stemmed pipe and beckoned the plum pudding special reserve to be placed upon a pedestal in the annals of pipe tobaccos.

This mixture has become one of my absolute favorite blends. I generally save this mixture for those days when a special reward is warranted, as its strength, taste and room note all provide for an intriguing smoke. I enjoy it most as an evening smoke after dinner is complete and all of the other day’s challenges are put to rest. On that occasion, it is best paired with a truly great bourbon like Willett, Basil Hayden or Eagle Rare, as its smoky complexity provides a truly great diversion – making all of the day’s inconveniences and difficulties to seemingly melt away!
