As a novice smoker I found it a bit of a hot smoker. Having a short stem and no filter, really requires heat control. Otherwise it is a beautiful pipe. The thick walls help with controlling the heat in the bowl, but pushing it heats it up very quick, especially with aromatics. I also found it hard to pickup a smoke after a while as the draught hole is quite wide and lets through a lot of ash.
But I guess this is the view of a beginner, but still a good pipe to smoke and the quality to boast.
