Early Morning Pipe by Peterson is considered a standard of measure for what a light English blend should be by a large number of experienced pipers.  The flavor is sour, sweet, and tangy more than smoky.  Because of the balance of the constituent tobaccos, the smoker is able to discern subtle flavors.

What is in it?
This blend is an English mixture which has been pressed and stoved.  This blend uses the following tobaccos.
Latakia: Cyprian Latakia is present in a small amount.
Oriental: The Oriental tobacco seems to be mostly Turkish.
Virginia: The Virginia here seems to be of the Red and Lemon varieties.

What does it smoke like?
Early Morning Pipe is considered a benchmark English blend by many.  This is a lighter flavor than you may find in some other blends.  No one component is the center of attention here.  The blend is flavorful, and it seems to be very balanced and well rounded.  The taste is dry in the same manner as some wines are dry.  Since the latakia is very lightly added, one should expect a sweet and tangy flavor with very little dark smokiness.  A consistent blend that could be smoked all day, this would make an ideal introduction to English blends.  Similar blends would include Presbyterian Mixture and SG Squadron Leader.

How to prepare it?
Peterson uses a beautiful medium ribbon cut for many of their blends.  This loads into a pipe very easily.  A brief drying is recommended but the tobacco is certainly smokable as is.  Use a lighter pack for maximum flavor, and tamp at regular intervals.

    Classic

Does this tobacco need another review when there are already 38 that average to a 5 star? Yes. Yes, it does. Especially if it helps get more in stock so I can get more tins in my stash. This early morning musty hay smell is delightful at any time of day. Not the lightest of blends but on the lighter side - my preference. Delicious. I'm with the crowd on this one.

    Excellent mix

Excellent mix, although I feel that the Virginias need to age, smooth and with a good room, totally recommended for beginners and for those who want a fresh mix.

    appreciated by generations

Posted by Pipe General on 19th Oct 2020

This blend has been around forever and has been appreciated by several generations of pipe smokers. I looked up the date which was initially introduced to the current marketplace, and near as I could tell it was introducted in 1912. Ever wonder just exactly how a combination stays a top seller for more than 100 years? Simple, really - it is very great. EMP is very great - very, very good. I believe that it's been very popular for so long because of its simplicity. It is comprised of Virgina and Oriental leaf. There may or might not be a few Latakia in there, but if it is it is only in trace quantities. The colour is a pleasing combination of tan and brown tobaccos, and the tin notice includes a wonderful Oriental sweetness for it. There's also some thing vaugly smoky in the marketplace, and that may or may not be Latakia. No matter the case, it is just wonderful. The tin note doesn't actually translate to space notice, since the room note is only a slight tobacco odor. Really good. Call it cigarette-like should you care about, but to me (and my wife) it's only a pleasant tobacco aroma. This isn't a mix to smoke if you're looking for some sort of deep experience out of your pipe, or you also wish to play a wide feeling of nuanced tastes. This can be a mix to smoke if you simply want to mindlessly enjoy a bowl of tobacco when studying or just bumming around the house. True to its name, it's just awesome from the early morning when you don't have a thing to contend with but peace and quiet - and also a great mug of coffee. In a way, it has a timeless OTC character to it. Merely fill, char, light, and drag off. No need for elaborate packing methods, no need for continuous relights, and no need to concentrate on it to attempt to pick out its sublte colors. I think they are shining examples of sophistication and class, where much less is more and more elegance is best expressed in an understated fashion. (What C&D and Pease mixtures want to be when they grow up). This blend is no exclusion, and it's Dunhill's response for the bronchial pipe smoker who wants a blend that he or she can just kick back and appreciate those rare moments when life, family, and livelihood are not imposing their demands upon us... those early mornings when it's us, our cup of coffee, the morning newspaper, along with peace and quiet. But do not be put off by the"dawn" conotation for itbecause it is enjoyable thought the remainder of the day too - if all you want is just a wonderful bowl of tobacco to enjoy your smoke break, lunch hour, or only doing nothing but enjoying a tube.

Pleasing aroma and flavor. An enjoyable smoke. Best to let it dry a bit and pack it light.
