Nording's Seagull series is yet another way Erik Nording showcases his brilliance when it comes to making tobacco pipes. Nording's design, a black stained smoking pipe with virgin rustication, gives the pipe the appearance of birds in flight. Nording named the series after seagulls, which are all around his home country of Denmark.
Gulls flock to Denmark because of the fishing industry there. Denmark is one of the largest fishing nations in the world, with roughly 20,000 people working in or around the nation's fishing business.
It makes sense for Denmark to be so involved in fishing since the country has approximately 4,500 miles of coastline, along with lakes and rivers throughout the land.
Denmark's history grew out of fishing. Medieval era Danish fishers would have coastal traps, primarily capturing eels. A couple of hundred years later, the country would further fishing innovation with the seine technique. This involved surrounding an area with a net that traps the fish, bringing in far more than any time before.
Now, if you know anything about seagulls, you know that they will be drawn to fishers. An easy meal is one they do not have to hunt for, so of course, they will be all over the docks that these men and women do business.
So Nording has plenty of experience with seeing seagulls and made this beautiful series of smoking pipes to make sure that the beauty of these animals does not go unnoticed.
